Here I am at the beginning: the drawing. I lay out possible glass choices and start playing with beads and gems. This mosaic is for a particular person, so I have to draw on their preferences and trust my intuition.
I started dreaming in mosaics in 2001. I looked into mosaics and found Laurel True, the founder of the Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland California. I took my first class with her in 2004 and made a stepping stone with ceramic tiles, but it wasn't the media I wanted to work in. In 2005, I took my first class in glass mosaics, and it was love at first sight. I have been working in glass ever since. I continue to take classes at IMA in mosaics and art classes at the community college nearby.
